History
INSPIRATION
The story behind our brand is deeply personal and rooted in a passion for celebrating life’s most precious moments. Founder and owner, Cheryl Young, reflects on her life, noting that from a young age, she was drawn to the colors pink and blue and had a natural love for babies, which led to babysitting being her first job.
BEGINNING YEARS
In 1971, Cheryl became a first-time mother to a baby boy (Jay) and was given a gift that left a lasting impression: a blue, glass-blown stork with a bundle attached. That stork would later serve as the inspiration for Stork News. Years later, when a neighbor had their baby, Cheryl was unimpressed with the typical pink bow on their mailbox. Determined to create something unique, she grabbed a piece of paper and sketched out her own stork design. With only $25 to her name, Cheryl purchased a sheet of plywood, drew her design, and with the help of her husband (John) cutting wood pieces and daughter (Kim) contributing her cross-stitch expertise, Cheryl brought her vision to life.
Cheryl poured her heart and soul into Stork News, working tirelessly to make her business a success. With a limited number of storks available, she sometimes had to hand paint a pink store blue and vice versa, depending on the client’s needs. Her first storks were sold for just $35, and Cheryl manually recorded every order in a green flight book that is still in her possession. The early days were full of hustle, with oil paints drying in her garage and dining room, as Stork News slowly began to take shape.
BECOMING A FRANCHISE
By year three, business was booming, and Cheryl’s vision for Stork News reached new heights. Calls poured in from across the country, and she quickly recognized the opportunity for expansion. Cheryl hired an expert to create a comprehensive manual for franchisees, and soon, people were flying and driving from all over the U.S. to her house to learn how to start their own Stork News franchise.
While Stork News’ original birchwood storks are still cherished by many, we’ve evolved to offer high-quality plastic storks that stand the test of time, never rotting or collecting mold. Cheryl still keeps one of the original plywood storks and has repurposed it at times to help make her mother’s mattress firmer during her visits to Cheryl and John’s home.
SUPPORT SYSTEM
Cheryl notes her husband, John, as being her biggest supporter throughout her career. The green book she logged customer orders in was actually a “flight book” acquired from John, who worked full-time as a pilot.
